When people begin exploring life on Prince Edward Island, the question of where to settle usually comes down to two cities: Charlottetown and Summerside. Both offer a high quality of life, strong communities, and access to the Island's best features. But they appeal to different priorities. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

How do the lifestyles compare?
Charlottetown is the cultural and economic capital of PEI. It has the Island's best restaurant scene, a vibrant downtown with heritage architecture, and a steady calendar of events including the Charlottetown Festival, live music, and seasonal markets. If you want to walk to dinner, catch a show, and feel the energy of a small city, Charlottetown delivers.
Summerside offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. The waterfront boardwalk along the harbour is one of the best on the Island, and the Credit Union Place recreation complex provides swimming, skating, and fitness facilities. Summerside has its own restaurants, shops, and a growing arts community, but it feels less hurried than Charlottetown.
Both cities are close to some of PEI's best beaches. From Charlottetown, Brackley Beach and Cavendish are about 25 to 35 minutes away. From Summerside, you are just 15 to 20 minutes from some of the most beautiful coastline on the north shore.
How do the housing markets compare?
Charlottetown's housing market is more competitive and higher priced. Character homes in Brighton and Spring Park, newer builds in West Royalty, and condos downtown all attract steady demand. Well-priced homes in desirable neighbourhoods still move quickly.
Summerside offers exceptional value across the board. You can find well-maintained homes, townhomes, and newer builds in a range that is typically 15 to 25 percent below comparable properties in Charlottetown. For buyers who want to maximise value or are looking for a quieter pace with strong community, Summerside is worth exploring.
Both markets have seen price growth in recent years as demand from out-of-province buyers has increased, but the overall cost of entry remains significantly lower than in Ontario or BC.

Cheryl knows both markets
Cheryl has spent more than a decade working across PEI, helping clients buy and sell in both Charlottetown and Summerside. She understands the nuances of each market: which neighbourhoods are undervalued, where the best value lies, and how the character of a community will shape your day-to-day life. Her goal is not to steer you toward one city or the other, but to help you find the place that truly fits.
