In all the years I have helped families downsize on Prince Edward Island, one question comes up more often than people expect: what about the dog? A pet is woven into the rhythm of daily life. They greet us at the door, join us on walks, and quietly keep us company through the changes a move brings. When you are choosing a smaller home, it is worth thinking about them with the same care you give any family member.
The good news is that downsizing rarely means giving up a good life for your pet. In fact, the opposite is often true. A smaller, easier home can give you more time for the long coastal walks, lazy porch afternoons, and daily routines that make a pet's life, and yours, richer.
Start with the daily routine, not just the floor plan
Before you fall in love with a floor plan, picture a regular day. Where will the food bowls go? Is there a spot for a crate or a bed that feels calm and out of the traffic? Is the main living space on one level, so stairs are never a barrier for an older companion? A home that fits your pet's routine will fit yours too. These small details shape whether a place feels like home for everyone.
What to look for in a pet-friendly downsized home on PEI
-
Outdoor space that asks for little. A manageable yard or a sunny patio gives your pet room to stretch without loading you down with upkeep. A fenced area can be a lovely bonus, and a welcome one for peace of mind.
-
Walks close by. Charlottetown is wonderfully pet-friendly. Victoria Park has an off-leash dog park with separate areas for large and small breeds, and the waterfront and Confederation Trail offer lovely daily routes. Living near these makes every day easier.
-
The right ownership rules. If you are looking at a condo or townhouse, ask about pet policies early. Many welcome pets, but restrictions can vary, so it is wise to confirm before you set your heart on a place.
-
Room for the things you love. A smaller home does not mean empty corners. Leave space for a dog bed by the window or a quiet spot for a cat, so everyone has a place that feels like their own.
A move is a transition for them too
Change is not always easy for our pets. Keeping familiar beds, bowls, and toys close during the move, and sticking to a steady routine in the first weeks, helps them settle. On PEI, there is plenty to ease the transition. Long walks along the shore, quiet neighbourhoods, and friendly people make it a gentle place for a new chapter, for the whole family.
Choose a home for the life you want to live
Downsizing is not about giving things up. It is about choosing what matters and making room for it. If your pet is part of that picture, let them guide your search. A smaller home near trails, green space, and the water can give you both a richer daily life. I would be glad to help you find that fit.
